PTC Online Testing System

WHAT IS IT A practice test consisting of 75 questions with a testing time of 2 hours taken over the Internet. For optimum performance, use Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher to take the online practice test. There is limited support for other browsers.

    Candidates from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington and Wyoming who do not have a current state certification/licensure as an alcoholism and/or drug abuse counselor MUST contact their state agency for the State Application. The applications on this web site apply ONLY to candidates who are already state certified and are seeking national certification.

Eligibility
Candidates for the NCAC examinations must meet the following criteria:
  1. Current state certification/licensure as an alcoholism and/or drug abuse counselor from the list of accepted state credentials.
  2. Three years full-time or 6,000 hours (not more than 2,000 per year) of supervised experience in alcoholism and/or drug abuse counseling.
  3. Document 270 contact hours of education and training in alcoholism and/or drug abuse or related counseling subjects.
    NOTE: All counselors who are seeking national level certification must           document at least six hours of AIDS/HIV training and six hours of           ethics training as part of their total hours.
  4. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics (inside back cover of this handbook), and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.
  5. Send all of the required information along with completed Application and required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation using the enclosed mailing label. All pages of the Application must be completed.
  6. Take and pass the written Level I examination.
  7. Receive final approval of the NAADAC Certification Commission.

Eligibility
Candidates for the NCAC examinations must meet the following criteria:
  1. Have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with emphasis in the counseling of addicted clients and provide an official or student copy of the transcript to the NCC.
  2. Current state certification/licensure as an alcoholism and/or drug abuse counselor from the list of accepted state credentials.
  3. Five years full-time or 10,000 hours (not more than 2,000 per year) of supervised experience in alcoholism and/or drug abuse counseling.
  4. Document 450 contact hours of education and training in alcoholism and/or drug abuse or related counseling subjects.
    NOTE: All counselors who are seeking national level certification must           document at least six hours of AIDS/HIV training and six hours of           ethics training as part of their total hours.
  5. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics (inside back cover of this handbook), and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.

Eligibility
Candidates for the Master Addiction Counselor must meet ALL the following criteria:
  1. Have a master's degree in a healing art or related field from a regionally accredited college or university with emphasis in the counseling of addicted clients and provide an official transcript (raised seal, special paper, multicolored signature block, etc) directly to the NCC.
  2. Current state level license or certification as an alcoholism and/or drug abuse counselor OR current state license in a healing art: i.e., Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), nurse, physician, psychologist, etc.
  3. Document three years (6,000 hours) of supervised alcoholism and/or drug abuse counseling experience. Two years of that experience must be post-master's degree award.
  4. Document 500 contact hours of education in specific alcoholism and drug abuse counseling matters. This education may be from any time in the educational background and may be from college courses, seminars, workshops, etc.
    Note: -All counselors seeking national level certification must document at least six hours of HIV/AIDS training and six hours of ethics training as part of the total hours.
  5. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics (starting on page 18), and sign the statement on the Application form affirming adherence to this code.
  6. Send all the required information along with the completed Application and required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation using the enclosed mailing label. All pages of the Application must be completed.
    NOTE: Academic institutions should furnish official transcripts to the           NAADAC Certification Commission and NOT to the Professional           Testing Corporation.
  7. Take and pass the written Master Addiction Counselor examination.
  8. Receive final approval of the NAADAC Certification Commission.

Adolescent Specialist Endorsement Examination

Eligibility
Candidates for the Adolescent Specialist Endorsement Examination must meet the following criteria:
  1. Have current AOD credential or license recognized by state or national organizations.
  2. Have five years or 10,000 hours of validated, supervised experience working in mental health or the addictions profession.
  3. Have two and a half years or 5,000 hours of validated, supervised experience working with the adolescent population.
  4. Provide evidence (documentation) of at least 70 contact hours of training related to adolescent treatment within the last five years. Up to 20% of the 70 hours can be from a nationally or regionally recognized online or distance learning program. At least 80% must be face-to-face contact. If using college courses, one college credit counts as 10 contact hours.
  5. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics (on page 15) and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.
  6. Send all of the required information along with completed Application and required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation. All pages of the Application must be completed.
  7. Take and pass the written Adolescent Specialist Endorsement Examination.
  8. Receive final approval of the NAADAC Certification Commission.

Eligibility
Candidates for the Certification Examination for Nicotine Dependent Specialists must meet the following criteria:
  1. Hold and provide evidence of current certification or licensure in the helping profession (i.e., nursing, respiratory therapy, or pharmacology).
  2. Provide evidence of three years full-time or the equivalent employment in the helping profession.
  3. Complete and provide documentation of 85 hours or more of specific nicotine education and additional documentation of training and education for specific field.
  4. Documentation of 270 contact hours of education and training in the health care profession.
  5. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics (page 11 of this handbook), and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.
  6. Send all of the required information along with completed Application and required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation, 1350 Broadway, 17th Floor, New York, NY 10018. All pages of the Application must be completed.
  7. Take and pass the written Certification Examination for Nicotine Dependent Specialists.
  8. Receive final approval of the NAADAC Certification Commission.

SCORE REPORT After completing the online practice test, you will receive an instant score report showing test performance in each of the content areas.
