Eligibility
Note: The Eligibility Requirements listed below are for candidates who are already State Certified and are seeking National Certification as a NCAC Level I or NCAC Level II. If you are applying for State Certification, please contact your state agency for details.

Candidates for the NCAC examinations must meet the following criteria:

LEVEL I
  1. Have a current state certification/licensure as an alcoholism and/or drug abuse counselor from the list of accepted state credentials.

  2. Have three years full-time or 6,000 hours (not more than 2,000 per year) of supervised experience in alcoholism and/or drug abuse counseling.

  3. Document 270 contact hours of education and training in alcoholism and/or drug abuse or related counseling subjects.

    NOTE: All counselors who are seeking National level certification must document at least six hours of AIDS/HIV training and six hours of ethics training as part of their total hours. Trainings must be within the past five years

  4. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.

  5. Send all of the required information along with completed Application and required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation. All pages of the Application must be completed.

  6. Take and pass the written Level I examination.

  7. Receive final approval of the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals.

Candidates for the NCAC examinations must meet the following criteria:

LEVEL II
  1. Have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with emphasis in the counseling of addicted clients and provide an official or student copy of the transcript to the NCC AP.

  2. Have a current state certification/licensure as an alcoholism and/or drug abuse counselor from the list of accepted state credentials.

  3. Have five years full-time or 10,000 hours (not more than 2,000 per year) of supervised experience in alcoholism and/or drug abuse counseling.

  4. Document 450 contact hours of education and training in alcoholism and/or drug abuse or related counseling subjects.

Eligibility
Note: The Eligibility Requirements listed below are for candidates who are already State Certified and are seeking National Certification as a Master Addiction Counselor. If you are applying for State Certification, please contact your state agency for details.

Candidates for the Master Addiction Counselor with co-Occurring Endorement Component Examination must meet ALL the following criteria:
  1. Have a master's degree in a healing art or related field from a regionally accredited college or university with emphasis in the counseling of addicted clients and provide an official transcript (raised seal, special paper, multicolored signature block, etc) directly to the NCC AP.

  2. Have a current state level license or certification as an alcoholism and/or drug abuse counselor OR current state license in a healing art: i.e., Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), nurse, physician, psychologist, etc.

  3. Document three years (6,000 hours) of supervised alcoholism and/or drug abuse counseling experience. Two years of that experience must be post-master's degree award.

  4. Document 500 contact hours of education in specific alcoholism and drug abuse counseling matters. This education may be from any time in the educational background and may be from college courses, seminars, workshops, etc.

    Note: All counselors seeking national level certification must document at least six hours of HIV/AIDS training and six hours of ethics training as part of the total hours. This education may be from college courses, seminars, workshops, etc. (Seminar and workshop trainings must be within the past five years.)

  5. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics in this handbook and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.

  6. Send all the required information along with the completed Application and required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation. All pages of the Application must be completed.

    NOTE: Academic institutions should furnish official transcripts to the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals and NOT to the Professional Testing Corporation.

  7. Take and pass the National Certification Examination for Master Addiction Counselors with Co-Occurring Endorsement Component. Upon passing the exam, the NCC AP will contact you to submit any additional required fees and documentation.

  8. Receive final approval of the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals.

Eligibility
Candidates for the National Certification Examination for Adolescent Addiction Counselors (NCAAC) must meet the following criteria:
  1. Have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree
  2. Have five years or 10,000 hours of validated, supervised experience working in mental health or the addictions profession.
  3. Have three of those five years or 6,000 hours of validated, supervised experience working with the adolescent population.
  4. Provide evidence (documentation) of at least 100 contact hours of training related to adolescent treatment within the last five years. Up to 50% of the 100 hours can be from a nationally or regionally recognized online or distance learning program. At least 50% must be face-to-face contact. If using college courses, one college credit counts as 10 contact hours.
  5. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.
  6. Submit completed Application with the required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation. All sections of the Application must be completed.
  7. Take and pass the National Certification Examination for Adolescent Addiction Counselors.
  8. Receive final approval of the NAADAC Certification Commission.

Candidates for the National Endorsement Examination in Co-Occurring Disorders must meet the following criteria:
  1. Have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or higher with an emphasis in SUD or mental health counseling.
  2. Hold a current credential/license recognized by a state or national organization, or an SUD credential for a minimum of five years.
  3. Have five years or 10,000 hours overall of validated, supervised experience (volunteer or hired) in Substance Use Disorder treatment, including 2 ½ years or 5,000 hours of validated, supervised experience working with the co-occurring population.
  4. Provide documentation of at least 70 contact hours in co-occurring disorders training within the last six years.
  5. Read the NAADAC/NCC AP Code of Ethics and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.
  6. Complete the online test application with the required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation. All sections of the application must be completed.
  7. Take and pass the written National Endorsement Examination in Co-Occurring Disorders.
  8. Receive final approval of the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals.

Eligibility
Candidates for the National Certification Examination for Peer Recovery Support Specialists must meet the following criteria:
  1. High school diploma or GED or higher;
  2. Minimum of one year of direct practice (paid or volunteer);
  3. 125 hours education and treating in addiction with a minimum of six hours training in addiction specific ethics and three hours training in HIV/AID/communicable diseases. Training must be within the past five years;
  4. Minimum one year of recovery from substance use/co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders (self-attestation), if applicable;
  5. Read the NAADAC Peer Recovery Support Specialist Code of Ethics and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code;
  6. Complete the online test Application with the required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation. All section of the application must be completed;
  7. Take and pass the Peer Recovery Support Specialist examination. Upon passing the exam, contact the NCC AP and submit any additional required fees and documentation required.
  8. Receive final approval of the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals to obtain the credential.

Eligibility
Candidates for the National Endorsement Examination for Student Assistance Professionals (NESAP) must meet the following criteria:
  1. Hold a current license recognized by state or national organization, or an SUD credential.
  2. Have three years or 6,000 hours of validated, supervised experience (volunteer or hired) in substance abuse prevention/intervention and/or treatment.
  3. Have two years or 2,880 hours (of the three years or 6,000 hours specified above) of experience in a school setting delivering Student Assistance services.
  4. Provide evidence (documentation) of at least 100 contact hours of SUD and/or mental health training; these hours must include 6 hours of professional ethics and 6 hours of HIV training. Also provide evidence of 70 contact hours of training related SAP service over last 5 years. Up to 40% of the 70 hours can be from a nationally or regionally recognized online or distance learning program. At least 60% must be face-to-face contact. If using college courses, one college credit counts as 10 contact hours.
  5. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.
  6. Submit completed Application with the required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation. All sections of the Application must be completed.
  7. Take and pass the written National Endorsement Examination for Student Assistance Professionals.
  8. Receive final approval of the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals.

Certification Examination for Nicotine Dependent Specialists
Eligibility
Candidates for the Certification Examination for Nicotine Dependent Specialists must meet the following criteria:
  1. Hold and provide evidence of current certification or licensure in the helping profession (i.e., nursing, respiratory therapy, or pharmacology).
  2. Provide evidence of three years full-time or the equivalent employment in the helping profession.
  3. Complete and provide documentation of 85 hours or more of specific nicotine education and additional documentation of training and education for specific field.
  4. Documentation of 270 contact hours of education and training in the health care profession.
  5. Read the NAADAC Code of Ethics (page 11 of this handbook), and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code.
  6. Send all of the required information along with completed Application and required fee to the Professional Testing Corporation, 1350 Broadway, 17th Floor, New York, NY 10018. All pages of the Application must be completed.
  7. Take and pass the written Certification Examination for Nicotine Dependent Specialists.
  8. Receive final approval of the NAADAC Certification Commission.

Online Testing Details
WHAT IS IT A practice test consisting of 75 questions with a testing time of 2 hours taken over the Internet. This test is designed for PC users only and is not compatible with Macintosh computers.

WHY TAKE IT To experience taking a computerized exam, to review an example of the type of content included in the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals' Examinations, and to learn more about question format, style, and level of difficulty

SCORE REPORT After completing the online practice test, you will receive an instant score report showing test performance in each of the content areas. The score report does not provide correct answers or indicate which questions were answered correctly and incorrectly. NOTE: Performance on the online practice test may differ from actual performance on the National Certification Examinations. Thus, there is no guarantee that taking this practice test will help you pass the National Certification Examinations.
